The Baldrige Foundation is privileged to honor Sister Mary Jean Ryan, Franciscan Sister of Mary, with the 2014 Harry S. Hertz Award. As President and CEO of SSM Health Care (SSMHC), and now as board chair of that St. Louis-based, healthcare network, Sister Mary Jean demonstrates visionary leadership and embodies the Baldrige core values while pursuing performance excellence in every facet of operations. Our judges reviewed the evidence of Sister Mary Jean’s remarkable achievements. She consistently applies the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence to improve the quality of life for patients, colleagues, employees and the surrounding community. Whether advocating for gender and racial diversity, taking bold steps to protect the environment, or banning smoking in SSMCH facilities, she has been a strong and courageous leader. This annual award ceremony is also an occasion to reflect on the valuable contributions that Harry Hertz has made to the Baldrige community and to our nation. His long service to the Baldrige program and his leadership in the development and evolution of its Criteria for Performance Excellence is continuing to help businesses, governments and organizations around the globe to perform at peak levels.
